As part of a drive to support industry and talent development, Servelec Controls has sponsored Aberdeen’s Robert Gordon University’s School of Computing Science and Digital Media Best Honours Project in Software Engineering every year for the past five years.
The award celebrates students’ achievements in creating high-quality software applications that are not only well-engineered, but relevant and applicable in critical real-world scenarios: something that aligns with Servelec’s value of engineering robust solutions that offer tangible benefits to clients and users.
This year Servelec Controls’ Director Ronald Holden presented the accolade to Jack Neilson for a project around facial recognition. Jack developed a software application that identifies faces within CCTV footage and seeks to match these against a database of faces.
Using test data obtained from CCTV recordings in semi-public spaces the success rate was >90%. Such an application can be used for a variety of purposes, for example in crime prevention or in seeking to locate a lost person, and would find results much faster than human scanning of video.
Following the presentation on 13 July 2018, Ronald said: “We are incredibly proud to support the next generation of engineers. The talent coming through Robert Gordon University each year is hugely promising for the future of both the students’ careers and the growth of the industry. We continue to support this award in the hope that it will motivate students to apply and further develop their skills, and help to set them up for a promising career in the software industry. I would like to congratulate Jack on a successful project well executed and wish him the best of luck for his career.”
